How Halloween Can Be a Night of Ministry

Blake Rhoades, Communications Director

Be the Hands and Feet of Jesus This Halloween

Every October, questions arise about what to do with Halloween—but what if we looked at it differently? From greeting trick-or-treaters with kindness to showing hospitality in our neighborhoods, Halloween can be a night of joy, connection, and light—one where we truly become the hands and feet of Jesus in our community.

A Night to Shine God’s Love

At its core, trick-or-treating is about community. It’s kids having fun, using their imagination, and sharing laughter with friends and neighbors. There’s something genuinely good about that! Let's get on board and use Halloween as chance to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our community.

When you greet trick-or-treaters with a smile, offer a kind word about their costume, or simply make your front porch a safe place with light and laughter, you’re doing ministry. You’re showing hospitality. You’re reminding families that the people of God are people of love.

Seeing little ones light up as they show off their costumes (and fill their candy buckets!) is a reminder for us that joy and imagination are gifts from God.

Even those “aren't you a little old” teenagers who show up at your door are looking for a welcoming smile. They've chosen to have fun and to be kids a little while longer. They may not say it but being welcomed with kindness rather than disapproval makes a difference in a teenager's self-esteem and confidence. They show up for more than the candy. They are there to have fun, to be accepted as part of the community, to know that they belong, and to be loved.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

This Halloween, turn on your porch light, grab a bag of candy, and meet your young and not so young neighbors with joy. You might be surprised by how God can use a simple night of fun to shine His light through you.

Here at East Side, we believe faith isn’t confined to Sunday mornings—it’s lived out in everyday moments, even on Halloween night. Let’s be people who reflect Jesus in our city with kindness, laughter, and love so that others can discover the Hope—one piece of candy at a time.
